1760
Carolina Thanksgiving and
Log Cabin Raising
In celebration of the Thanksgiving season Rural Hill hosts a 1760 style
Thanksgiving living history event of the Colonial era which includes skilled
craftsmen and artisan demonstrations and militia soldiers performing various
drills and maneuvers.
Other
activities to see are 18th
century children’s games, musket firing demonstrations and open hearth
Colonial style cooking, which the ladies will be preparing an actual
Thanksgiving dinner.
One of the premiere demonstrations of the weekend is an
actual log cabin raising, which volunteers work throughout the Fall to
construct by hand.
The log cabin is auctioned off typically in November by a
charitable organization known as a One Special Christmas.
While the log house is a centerpiece of the auction,
individual crafters also donate handmade furniture, pottery, artwork, folk
art, and other crafts to the auction, including work from some of
North Carolina's
finest artists and crafters.
The money they raise goes
to providing Christmas gifts for children in need.
