Catawba Valley Scottish Society Receives the very first
Coat of Arms
in the world to be granted by Scotland to a Scottish Games organization.

The Mission

The mission is to educate people about the culture, heritage and contributions of the Scots and Scots-Irish and to provide venues for recognizing and celebrating their rich legacy.

The Society

The Catawba Valley Scottish Society, Inc. (CVSS) was chartered on November 3, 1992. The organization was formed by descendants of the Scots and Scots-Irish of the Catawba River Valley region of the Carolinas. This historic corridor runs from the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in North Carolina to the Atlantic coast in South Carolina and, along with the Great Wagon Road that came down through the Shenandoah Valley from Pennsylvania, it was one of the most significant corridors of Scots and Scots-Irish settlement in Colonial America. The Carolinas are still home to one of the highest concentrations of people of Scottish or Scots-Irish decent in the United States.

On May 9, 1995, the Catawba Valley Scottish Society, Inc. (CVSS) accepted stewardship of Rural Hill Farm. From settlement in 1760 until purchased for preservation by Mecklenburg County in 1989, Rural Hill had been the homestead of six generations of the family of Major John and Violet Wilson Davidson. Under a lease agreement with Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, the CVSS has developed a Master Plan to preserve Rural Hill as community resource and family attraction for visitors to Mecklenburg County year round.

Plans for the Rural Hill – Center of Scottish Heritage include preservation of historic assets located within the 265 acre farm, development of historical, agricultural and environmental programs and construction of a cultural center facility as well as providing a venue for cultural heritage events.

The Rural Hill - Center of Scottish Heritage will serve as a working example of the farming heritage of the Catawba River Valley as well as a focal point for artistic, historical and cultural activities. It will be a regional center where all people interested in the contributions of the Scots and Scots-Irish can experience the rich legacy of this ancient culture.

Join us on this most excellent adventure.
